Genome science needs to learn from ayurveda: Expert
Thangavelu explores possibilities of collaborative research
Cambridge University genome researcher Dr Madan Thangavelu has expressed the need to turn to ayurveda to complement cutting edge genome science, as the world celebrates the 10th anniversary of the first draft of the 'Human Genome Project' on June 26. Thangavelu was in the city to explore possibilities of collaborative research and had discussions with Dr Kalpana Joshi, the principal
nvestigator for the Ayu-Genomics project and head of
department of bio-technology at the Sinhgad Institute, Pune. The meetings were organised by the city-based MM Activ Sci-Tech Communications.

Thangavelu is a research fellow at the Cambridge University with the department
of oncology and medical research council. He is doing research on developing techniques for single cell and single DNA molecule genomics. Thangavelu told DNA that even after 10 years of research, the scientists have found that every genome was different and the promises made were much hyped.
"We have realised that one has to join hands with traditional knowledge systems like
ayurveda. It has been revealed that ayurveda knew some contemporary facts almost thousands of years ago. This underlines the need for collaborative research," he said.
Thangavelu said he will discuss the issue with the international strategy group at
Cambridge. Commenting on the outcome of the Genome Project, he said,
"Charaka had said many hundreds of years ago, 'Study of science of life will never
achieve finality'
